…including sleep-wake cycles, regulation of your metabolism, hunger/fullness signals, temperature regulation, and more. When your thyroid isn’t functioning properly, it can lead to a variety of symptoms that significantly impact your day-to-day and even put you at risk for serious diseases, like osteoporosis, heart disease, and certain cancers.
Thyroid disorders affect women more than men, most likely because women face multiple hormonal transitions across a lifetime—such as menopause and pregnancy—making them more susceptible to dysfunction compared to men. If you have a thyroid disorder, here’s what you might experience:
Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, can cause fatigue despite adequate sleep, unexplained weight gain, and difficulty losing weight even with a healthy lifestyle. You may feel unusually cold and have dry skin, brittle hair, and hair loss. Digestive issues like constipation are also common, along with mood swings, depression, and trouble concentrating or remembering. Muscle weakness, cramps, and joint pain are also typical symptoms.
On the other hand, an overactive thyroid or hyperthyroidism can cause unintended weight loss despite increased appetite, excessive warmth, and sweating. You may experience a rapid heart rate, anxiety, irritability, sleep disturbances, shaky hands or fine tremors, frequent bowel movements, thinning hair, or hair loss. Recognizing these symptoms early can help you address potential thyroid issues and seek the right treatment.
At Balanced Health, conduct a full thyroid panel on patients showcasing symptoms to get a comprehensive picture of their thyroid health and evaluate autoimmunity. While many doctors only test for Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), we take a functional medicine approach to thyroid health by conducting a more in-depth test.
Along with your thyroid panel, we’ll have a face-to-face consultation with you to discuss your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle and develop a treatment strategy that will ensure the result is an optimally functional thyroid gland. Treatment plans vary, but we typically administer bioidentical hormone therapy, high-quality nutraceuticals, or medicinal herbs designed to support healthy thyroid function, and we often recommend dietary changes, and stress-reducing habits. This holistic approach to treating thyroid disorders creates effective and lasting results and will have a noticeably positive effect on your everyday life.
